Andrea Vernon and the Corporation for Ultrahuman protection

By: Alexander C. Kane

This one I got almost by accident but what a gem it turned out to be.

This is both funny and imaginative.

Who would have thought that anybody could come up with a good spin on superheroes that isn’t already done to death?

This is a truly remarkable debut book.

At some point in the future or perhaps in an alternate reality, superheroes offer their protection via various corporations.  If a supervillain, space alien, or other problem appears then the superhero corporation with a contract for that area will respond.

The story comes with great superheroes and supervillains.
A lot of funny interaction, absurd situations and a tad of romance.

The narration is great. I AM THE BIG AXE!

Fall; or, Dodge in Hell

By Neal Stephenson

This book was a slough to get through.
The hardest I have had with a book in a long time.

The book starts with a bit of near future science fiction, and that is my favorite part.

I do like the idea to explore how do humans who have had their brains digitally scanned “boot up” there Is a lot of potential with that idea. That they all want to live in the middle ages does not make any sense.
It then describes a person playing what seems to be a very boring game of Civilization, detailed in excruciating details. This takes up a looong part of the book.
This eventually gives way to a quest, which sounds like a mediocre game of Dungeons and Dragons which again is boring and takes forever.
I am proud of myself to have finished this book.
I kept hoping that there would be something great coming around the corner but there wasn’t.
I should say I am usually a fan of Neal Stephenson, and he has written some of my favorite books so I came to this with high expectations. Amazon in part describes it as “entertaining science fiction thriller”. That is just false marketing. Every part of that is wrong.

Why?

Posted on July 19, 2019 Written by Developer Leave a Comment

Why do I run this website?

Over time I have found that contributing to social media companies, was much like working for them and not getting paid.

I disliked the way I had no control over my own content, it could get deleted, forgotten, altered and promoted.

My writing also got spread out on several different properties.

I have now tried to disengage as much as possible with social media and accept whatever possible loss of influence that may bring.

I like owning my own site, it costs a bit of money with the configuration I went with, I know it can be done a lot cheaper and over time I might adjust things.

The biggest problem with running your own site is how do you drive traffic to your content. I have chosen to not worry about that. I dont expect to make any money off of this. I am not going to spend much time promoting it.

If I become the only reader I am ok with that because a lot of what gets posted here is to help me remember things.

Hopefully some other peolpe might find an article or two interesting enough.
