Anna

I have been a lifelong fan of Luc Besson. He has created some fantastic movies.

The first movie of his I ever saw was La Femme Nikita back in 1990. (You should watch this one)

This is a movie about a down on her luck drug user who gets recruited into a secret organization after she kills a police officer. They trains her to be a perfect sexy assassin.

This was remade into an American movie called “Point of No return” which removed the edgy bits that made the story work out well for me in the original.

This got turned into an American tv series called “La Femme Nikita” that ran for many seasons. (1997 – 2001).

This was relaunched as an American tv show called Nikita (2011 – 2013)

So in short the premise of the movie La Femme Nikita has been milked well by Luc Besson.

In 2014 he did a movie called Lucy, which is about a woman who involuntarily gets involved in a bad deal and transforms into a merciless warrior. (Which is getting a sequel soon)

Now let us get back to the movie Anna I am reviewing.

it is about a down on her luck drug using girl who gets recruited into the KGB and becomes a top sexy assassin for them.

So:

  1. Pretty Girl
  2. Recruitment into some nefarious organization
  3. Perfect sexy assassin .

Again it is a good movie but it feels like a bad remake of Le Femme Nikita and Lucy

But it is a story he has told well many times and people who are not as familiar with his movies this might come off as original.

Oracle

This was a book with an interesting premise.
What if someone could sense the future, but be unaware of it.
Could they be helped to develop it?

Aliens visiting Earth seem to think so and they have searched for the right candidate for a long long time.

I won’t give away too much more of the plot, in case you might want to read it.

My recommendation is don’t.

Yes the girl learns to use her intuition, but is it really necessary to repeat it every other sentence? I can remember it.

This book is let down by being far too repetitive. Have a higher opinion of the reader. Trust that they don’t need to have the same facts drummed into their head multiple times per page.

This book also suffers from the Übermensch fallacy.

If you are really bored on a flight, you might pick this book up but if you are reading it for the enjoyment of reading find something much better.

The Chemist

I have no idea how or why I bought this book and I really wish I had not.

I would like if I read the same book as Charles Finch of USA Today who gave it a glowing endorsement. I find it hard to believe we read the same text.

There is nothing notable about this bore of a book. Everything is a cliche followed up by another cliche. The characters are one dimensional and with a few exceptions do not grow or develop during the book.

It was like a bad made for tv movie but a movie is usually done after 90 minutes and I spent longer than that reading this garbage.

It is about a woman who worked for a secret part of the government, so secret it doesn’t have a name. She had to run away from her job and life because now this non named government entity was trying to kill her and it develops just like you would expect.

I found out later that it written by the same author who wrote the “Twilight saga”. Had I picked up on that I probably would not have made the mistake of reading it.

The Fanatic

This was an unexpected gem.
The script is not particularly surprising.
You know where the film is going from the start.

What makes this movie shine is how John Travolta delivered one of his best acting jobs ever. He really went all out for this role and it carries the entire movie.

The rest of the cast is well chosen and work well with Mr Travolta.

The movie is about an obsessive fan who is a social outcast existing on the fringes of society. He passion for his hero grows as the movie toddles along, util he becomes disenchanted with his former hero.

As I said the script is not going to win any Oscars, but I hope Travolta acting will.
